Minecraft: A Guide to Building a Switchable Portal

The editor who knows how it’s done but struggles to actually do it is back again~ Our friends plan to visit our home in a few days, so today we’re going to build a switchable Nether portal. Our large (matchbox) mansion’s cool factor is sure to improve a lot. Let’s take a look at how to do it now~

Switchable Nether Portal

As everyone knows, a Nether portal consists of an obsidian frame that is 5 blocks high and 4 blocks wide. Using a flint and steel on the bottom obsidian block activates the portal.

So, how do we make a switchable portal? First, we build a 5×4 obsidian frame.

Adventurers can surround the front of the portal with any material they want. Since we’re “financially challenged,” we’ll just use regular blocks to enclose it.

Place two regular blocks behind the portal, and then place a dispenser in the bottom-right corner.

Also place a dispenser in the upper-left corner of the portal.

Add some basic wall and floor decoration. Place stone buttons on the walls on both sides.

The front part is pretty much done~ Now let’s look at the back. Both dispensers are facing the portal.

First, use redstone dust to connect the lower dispenser to the stone button.

Behind the upper dispenser, place a redstone torch and a regular block as shown. The redstone torch will turn off at this point.

Place four redstone repeaters on the regular block below the redstone torch (direction as shown). Set the three repeaters farther from the portal to the fourth tick delay.

Connect them with redstone dust around the sides, then run the redstone dust to the stone button.

The redstone circuit part is now complete! Now, place water (or lava) in the upper dispenser and flint and steel in the lower dispenser.

A switchable portal is now complete! When we press the button on the right, the flint and steel in the lower dispenser will ignite the obsidian, creating the Nether portal.

Go to the right side and press the right stone button; the dispenser will pour out water to extinguish the portal.

Water is spilling out. We can solve this by placing a few trapdoors on the portal frame~

Add a bit of decoration to this plain little room, and you can bring your friends over for a tour~

With this switchable portal as a centerpiece, the room doesn’t seem so (simple/plain) anymore~ Have you adventurers learned how to do it?

After checking out our switchable Nether portal, adventurers should hurry into the game and build one themselves~
