As is well known, in the early development and testing versions of Minecraft, there were always some “accidentally born” features. Some ordinary features that didn’t affect game balance were even kept as small quirks of the game.
However, more features were eventually fixed during repeated testing. Today, let’s take a look at those interesting features that briefly appeared before being deleted!

01. Void Particles
Whether in the Overworld or the Nether, below the lowest layer of bedrock lies the Void, like a boundless universe. Players digging deeper could only gauge their proximity to the Void by the number of bedrock blocks encountered and their coordinates.

In some early versions, there was another way to tell if you were approaching the Void. Starting when the Y-coordinate fell below 18, many tiny “Void particles” would appear near the Void. The denser these Void particles were, the closer you were to the Void.

Later, they were removed for performance optimization. Such a subtle difference is something many adventurers probably never even noticed~
02. Round Moon?
Everyone knows that in the Minecraft we play now, whether in version 1.7 or 1.16, the textures for the sun and moon are square, just like other items in this world.

Actually, in the ancient version Beta 1.9, sun and moon textures with more “arc-like” shapes appeared, closer to being circular. However, this feature only appeared in pre4 and pre5; it was reverted to the original look in pre6. After all, Minecraft is a square world!

03. The Witch’s Hat
In snapshot 18w50a, the Witch’s skin texture wasn’t like it is now.

They had an additional purple hood on their heads. But honestly, it looked pretty cool~

04. Air Blocks
In snapshot 13w38b for version 1.7.2, air could briefly exist in a player’s inventory in the form of an item/block. Air blocks only existed in this one version.

05. Everything Can Be a Potted Plant
The last feature to mention is quite interesting. From snapshot 13w36a to snapshot 17w47a, flower pots could hold ferns and some other items. Even cobwebs could be placed in a flower pot!

However, these special potted plants couldn’t be obtained directly; they required commands to acquire. Even more interestingly, the “Iron Trapdoor” block was added in snapshot 14w07a, leading to the creation of the “Iron Trapdoor Potted Plant”~

So, how about it? Would placing such a potted plant in your home make the whole room feel more “substantial”?
These were the short-lived features from Minecraft brought to you today!
