After five years of development, mod makers have finally completed a project that perfectly integrates the Portal gameplay into Minecraft. This mod allows Minecraft: Java Edition players to not only experience the puzzle mechanics and core gameplay of Portal but also create their own levels. Most excitingly, the mod runs on the vanilla game, so players don’t need to install any secondary mods to enjoy it.

Portal and Minecraft were released around the same time, in 2007 and 2009 respectively. Both games caused a sensation upon release — Minecraft has continued to receive a large number of updates, while Portal, thanks to its immense popularity, prompted Valve to release a sequel. Portal 2 even added a cooperative mode. However, in the years since, the Portal series has gradually faded from the spotlight with no major new installments, while Minecraft remains vibrant and active to this day. Players who miss the Portal series can now experience its classic gameplay through this new mod.

This mod, titled Portal: Java Edition, has now been publicly released, allowing players to fully experience all the core content of Valve’s Portal 2 within Minecraft. Amazingly, the mod achieves perfect compatibility with vanilla Minecraft using only the game’s built-in data packs and resource packs. A demonstration video showcases all the classic elements: portals, light bridges, tractor beams, lasers, emancipation grids, propulsion gel, excursion funnels, and more. The fidelity of the recreation was so high that many viewers mistook it for the original game.

The mod includes 50 levels and 8 map packs, providing players with rich puzzle-solving content. Even more remarkably, it also features a built-in map editor — the demonstration clip shows the process of a player creating their own portal level, which will greatly expand the game’s replayability and creative space.
Minecraft has always encouraged players to realize their wildest ideas, and recreating other classic games is a prime example of this. Previously, players have successfully recreated games like Tetris, Super Mario Bros., and Pac-Man within Minecraft. Projects like the recreation of The Legend of Zelda, for instance, also run without needing to install additional mods.
